Two from eleven tipped four years ago

Such are the prognostications of armchair selectors, four years ago I boldly predicted the starting XI of the Australian test team for this test summer just gone. They were: Hughes (NSW) Bailey (c) (Tas) Khawaja (NSW) Ferguson (SA) Marsh, M (WA) Smith (NSW) Paine (TAS) O’Keefe (NSW) McDermott (QLD) Hazelwood (NSW) Pattinson, J (VIC) The 1st Test versus India in Adelaide featured the following players: Rogers Warner Watson Clarke (c) Smith Marsh, M Ha...

Why I loved ‘the’ Cricket Australia tweet

Normally I’m one of the first bemoaning poor management and governance decisions in sport, especially when it comes to Cricket Australia. As a communications consultant and former political adviser, I’ve spent much of my career working with people to try and mitigate risk. The adage “don’t say anything you don’t want on the front page” was taught to me from a very young spin doctoring age, and it’s a good principle – one, in fact, I try and impart with my clients – and one we work with our wr...

Melbourne sacking was inevitable, but it doesn’t make it any less sad

As a little kid in outer suburban Chirnside Park in the late 1970s, I still recall my parents giving me the opportunity to pick the footy team I’d barrack for. Would it be Collingwood, for whom Mr Carthew, across the street, had played? Essendon, the team of my grandfather?   For the full post, please click here to see it on The Armchair Selector.

Gone too soon – a rugby fan’s lament

And so, with a loss, it ends. The song, the drummers, the kids at half time, the famous Rebel yell. Gone for another season. Yes, there are more games to be played, but they are away. Irrespective of the loss last night and the farewell of some great players, I walked into the Stockade before the game saddened. Surely it was yesterday that I sat and reflected on the Rebs’ first season, and the excitement. It was, wasn’t it? Read more on my thoughts as the Rebels' season ends at The Armchai...

Armchair cricket selectors – pick your Australian Test team 2014-15

In a Twitter conversation yesterday with @Matt_Cenin, I threw out my 2014-2015 Ashes Test team and he hand some good ideas in terms of people like Nic Maddinson and Mitch Starc as future Test players. Given the interest in the Australian team for the future, I’d like to offer four people, fellow cricket pundits, the opportunity to guest post their views on who they think will be the eleven blokes taking the field for the start of the 2014-15 Australian summer. My post back in October had this ...

Five reasons why I’m a proud Rebels fan

It was very cold last night at the Stockade. It was cold, and it was sad. It was sad, not so much because we lost, but because there would be no next game to look forward to. As the players mingled with their fans, kids kicked balls on the pitch, as the fireworks went off to summons the end of the Melbourne Rebels’ inaugural season, no-one really wanted it to end. Sporting success is generally associated with on-field success, of champions taking all before them, and of soaring victories. Succ...

The glorious Rebelution

Despite the fact that the Hurricanes are my adopted former home town team, I'm still on a massive high after the Melbourne Rebels' win against the 'Canes last night at AAMI Park - aptly also known as the Stockade. The Rebels' article this morning really put the crowd's passion and the team's belief in themselves in perspective: The article, referring to captain Stirling Mortlock: Mortlock, one of the most experienced players in the history of Australian rugby, paid a special tribute to the AAM...

Why Whateley may be right; and an Ashes Test team – four years from now

This morning on ABC1's Offsiders, Gerard Whateley made some comments on the need for generational change in the Australian Test team.   He was right. This coming Ashes test series isn't going to be a doddle, it's going to be tough. And while we can reasonably expect not to play in India as well as we may at home, the fact is that the team is carrying some players; the team needs regeneration as we look post-Ashes; and there are blokes waiting, scoring runs, ready. If you're not prepared...
